EVOLVING through NATURE Plas Brondanw

October 2025

I was invited by John Hedley to collaborate on a project supported by the Arts Council of Wales. The idea was to create installations using fallen oak branches from the Plas Brondanw estate to be exhibited in the grounds of the gallery. We selected several each.

My aim was to produce sculptures using the branches, first charring them, then balancing them on the metal frames. I pressed the porcelain into the bark of the branches to pick up the indentation of the bark. For this project I decided to make the porcelain thicker than usual and to thread it with copper wire – making a connection with copper mines that used to be located in the area. – while still keeping the organic forms.

We shared one of the branches – each making small fungi shapes to attach. At the end of the installation – a month later – the branch was covered with delicate rust coloured real fungi.
